On behalf of Friends of Harbison State Forest membership and board of directors,
thank you for your interest in the forest and our organization. Those of us who are
local residents are truly fortunate to have the largest urban green space in the
southeastern United States in such close proximity to our homes and places of employment,
thereby making it very convenient to enjoy the benefits of this incredible outdoor facility.
While Harbison State Forest was originally conceived and implemented as a timber resource,
its role has expanded considerably to include outdoor education and recreation, thanks to the
vision of South Carolina Forestry Commission managers in conjunction with the dedication of
local user community advocates.
In addition to the educational and recreational opportunities that enhance the quality of life
for the user community, HSF provides economic benefits to all South Carolinians:
25% of all directly generated revenues go to local school districts and there is a considerable economic
benefit to local businesses produced by the patronage of the HSF user community, both by locals
and out of area visitors.
Friends of Harbison State Forest is a non-profit 501(c) 3 organization founded in the spring of 2003
to preserve and promote the educational and recreational aspects of this urban forest. Please consider
joining us and participating in one or more of the committees. It will be a rewarding experience that
enriches your life.
Best Regards,
Harry Mathis, President
